Merrcury Engine
Technology
The Merrcury Engine is a distributed infrastructure of software, hardware, data, and APIs. The Merrcury Engine has been used as the platform to power several marketplaces with dozens of web sites.
We started developing the Merrcury Engine back in 2008, and we constantly tinker with and improve it. These are some of its key features:
- Development Methodology: A custom flavour of Agile Development and the Rational Unified Process
- Documentation: Approx. 214 detailed use cases and 1107 user interfaces
- Architecture: Low-coupling service architecture (distributed in scopes)
- Framework: A customized version of CakePHP and jQuery
- Database Management System: MySQL with database version control
- Automated Testing: ~680 unit test asserts
- Internationalization: Full i18n and l10n for both the user interfaces and data provided by the users
- Hosting: Amazon EC2 and S3
We thought it might be fun to produce a handy visualization of its documentation. You’ll see the result below. We’ve rendered the pages and links from the wiki we used to document all of the use cases and user interfaces that we have developed for the Merrcury Engine. Each node is a use case or user interface. Each orange line is a link to a use case, while each black line is a link to a user interface. The version we’ve provided is very small, but the original size of the graph is around 25k x 20k pixels. It was rendered using the radial method of Graphviz.
